JACOBS, SCHWALBE & PETRUZZELLI, P.C.

Your Cherry Hill Supplemental Security Income Attorney

Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, is a federal assistance program designed to provide financial support to aged and disabled people with limited income and resources.

At Jacobs, Schwalbe & Petruzzelli, P.C., we have been helping sick and injured people for more than 40 years – and we get results. Because of this reputation, other attorneys refer clients to us for help with their disability claims. Our lawyers understand the Social Security Administration’s (SSA’s) processes, and we know how to help you get the benefits you deserve.

Who Is Eligible For SSI Benefits?

Unlike Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits, SSI is a need-based system. There are no “work credits” needed for entitlement. Instead, you may be eligible for SSI when:

  • You are 65 years old or older, blind or disabled
  • You have limited income in your household
  • You have limited financial resources (property, vehicles, money)
  • You are a U.S. citizen or meet the criteria of a qualified alien

Once you pass the initial financial screening, SSA will then evaluate whether you meet the agency’s definition of “disabled.” To meet that definition, your condition must be severe enough to keep you from performing substantial gainful activity for at least 12 months or be terminal.

How Can An Attorney Help You Obtain SSI Benefits?

You can file for SSI benefits online through SSA’s website, in person at a field office, or over the phone. While you are not required to have an attorney to file your claim, an experienced SSI attorney, like ours at Jacobs, Schwalbe & Petruzzelli, P.C., can make certain that your case is submitted with all the relevant medical information and other data necessary for SSA to approve a claim the first time around – and that can shave months or years off your wait for benefits.

The maximum monthly SSI payment changes each year, but New Jersey supplements most checks with additional money.
